Intel Pakistan Country Head – Naveed Siraj – giving presentation at the launch event of Intel 3rd Generation processors in Pakistan
If you are really obsessed with catchy form factor of Apple’s notebooks, here come dozens of choices for all those who desire speed, performance, light, thin and elegant notebook. Intel 3rd generation processor (Ivy Bridge) based Ultrabooks have hit the local market.
Intel says that its 3 dimensional transistor technology used in this new generation of processors have made possible number of amazing value added features. So far, more than 60 Ultrabooks have been planned for the year 2012 that will be available from almost every leading manufacturer such as HP, Dell, Acer and so on.
Intel officially shown the latest features that are built-in to its 22 nanometer (nm) 3rd generation Ivy Bridge processors based Ultrabooks in a ceremony held in Karachi. Not only we happened to see glimpses of existing Ultrabooks but Intel Pakistan Country Head, Mr. Naveed Siraj also talked about the features upcoming Ultrabooks will have in 2012.
These Ultrabooks are highly responsive as compared to our conventional notebooks. It takes 2 to 3 seconds before you resume the display from the sleep mode. Intel claims that due to its new processors the performance has increased 20 times whereas the graphical processing is 2 times better than earlier 2nd generation series. Ultrabooks are ultra thin owing to the technological modifications for example, screen is just 3mm thin whereas the batteries have been reduced to 6.5mm from old 18mm batteries.
While giving presentation Naveed Siraj said, ” 7 years ago, it would take enough time from booting my computer till downloading all my emails in the morning that i could easily smoke 3 to 4 cigarettes in between because the damn machine was so slow coupled with the issues of connectivity within Pakistan.  Today, the responsiveness has increased many times. It is hardly a matter of few seconds now before you get everything on your screen”
The Ultrabooks are thinnest so far. As number of international manufacturers are designing these machines, Intel last year set up a $ 300mn fund to make sure that thinness is not compromised. Intel says, there must be an ongoing innovation to keep the machine in a thinnest possible design. Unlike conventional notebooks, there no sockets. Rather everything is on internal board for making it possible to occupy minimum space. So the thinness and removal of extra components have made these machines lightest as well.
Naveed said, “Ultrabooks are ultra secure. Today you spend most of the time with your computing devices. Apart from maintaining the personal profile on your social networks, you keep all the business related data while you are mobile. For the security purpose, your Ultrabook will recognize your voice and your touch because the architecture this time allows with the introduction of 3D transistor technology. Earlier, few of the manufacturers were offering these security features by installing a separate chip apart from controlling through software. Now, the added features of security are built-in on silicon of new Ivy Bridge processor”
A movie clip highlighting the anti-theft feature shown that in case your Ultrabook is stolen, it will get locked automatically. There are two option that you can set to ensure the stolen machine does not work;
  1. Set the duration in your system, if your Ultrabook is not used for certain number of days, it will get locked
  2. You can go to Intel’s website and enter your machine’s code online. Soon as your machine comes online, it will be poisoned and become useless.
We are not sure at this time, if this feature will guarantee the return of the stolen Ultrabook to its owner or not but i believe it is more concerned with the safety of your important data inside.
Apart from being fast, thin and light, we found the ‘Wide Eye‘ feature a little more exciting. Ultrabook can talk to other devices around wirelessly. It can wirelessly display your presentation or a movie on a mega external screen in your room. We saw the live demonstration and it was flawless as far the picture quality and overall connectivity was concerned. We were told that soon in 2012 Ultrabooks will communicate wirelessly with speakers as well. We can expect how this Wide Eye feature can be a very demanding thing for business professionals and entertainment lovers.
Talking further on 3rd generation of processors, Naveed said, The basic purpose of 3D transistor is to do three things the very best that when the transistor is on, as much electrons as possible should go through it and when it is closed, as little electrons should flow through it avoiding the leakage of power which is the advancement we have under taken. Also, how quickly a transistor switches from the state of on and off, adds to the performance”.
“7 years ago with Centrino technology we had claimed that Intel processor will give you best performance in terms of wireless connectivity. Today’s technology is way bigger than what we announced then. Intel is building a complete eco system for this technology. Last year, Intel set up a $ 100mn Intel Application fund (AppUp) for ensuring the optimum applications support for our newer breed of processors”.
Just like Android and Apple, we are likely to see number of useful applications becoming a part of Ultrabook ecosystem.
We were happy to hear that there were many Pakistani companies already assembling good quality Ultrabooks in Pakistan and some of them were on display at the event.
Intel says it will keeping innovating and bringing high tech Ultrabooks besides working on its conventional notebooks. The support for such notebooks will continue as per plans.
We had a chit chat with Naveed Siraj at the end of the event, we really wanted to know that why Intel is focusing so much on Ultrabooks – a very enhanced flavor of notebook – when it already dominates and enjoys 83% share in the notebook market whereas the world is passionate about more compact tablets and touch interface. He said, “The purpose of setting up of funds is that we along with our partners worldwide keep innovating in terms of design and quality in such a way that your future Ultrabook could be used as a tablet as well as a notebook. Tablets you have today in the market are very good but when it comes to the professional working, you need to go back to your notebook. But, the swiveling screens of future Ultrabooks will serve in both ways and thinness will hardly give you a feeling that you have a notebook in your hand”.
“Intel is eagerly waiting for Windows 8 that is built for the touch interface. But we are not restricting ourselves  to the Windows only, we will welcome other platforms as well including Android” added Siraj.
